Field Replaceable SMA Connectors

San-tron Inc, announces the introduction of field replaceable SMA connectors.

The field replaceable SMA connectors are available for 0.012”, 0.015”, and 0.020” diameter launch pins with 1/2” square, 3/8” square, 1/2” by 3/8”, .500” 2-hole, .550” 2-hole or .625” 2-hole flange configurations. Other mounting options may be made available upon request.

They feature high-performance gold-plated beryllium copper contacts, polyetherimide (PEI) capture bead, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) insulators and rugged stainless-steel bodies. They fully comply with MIL-STD-348.

San-tron’s field replaceable SMA connectors are mode free and deliver low VSWR performance through 27 GHz. The connectors are unique in that they provide equivalent electromagnetic performance, from DC to 27 GHz, as similar products produced by Southwest Microwave.

San-tron Unveils High Performance 2.92mm Connectors and New Company Look

San-tron Inc, announces the introduction of a new company logo and a new line of high performance, 2.92mm cable connectors.

“We are extremely excited to introduce our new company logo”, said Chris Sanders, Director of Sales and Marketing, San-tron. “Our updated logo embodies San-tron’s commitment to the development and introduction of coaxial interconnect products for today and tomorrow’s millimeter-wave electronics.”

San-tron’s new line of high performance, 2.92mm (K band) cable connectors are designed for maximum K band performance. They have a VSWR of < 1.20:1 and are mode free from DC to 40 GHz.

The new connectors are available for HP160S (.160” OD) and HP 190 (.190” OD) coaxial cables as well as .047”, .086” and .141” flexible, conformable or semi-rigid coaxial cables.

The new 2.92 series connectors feature high performance gold plated, beryllium copper contacts, polyphenylene oxide (PPO) or polyetheretherketone (PEEK) support bead, rugged stainless steel bodies and fully comply with MIL-STD-348 and IEC 61169-35. Configurations for other cable types are available upon request.

New 4.3-10 Series RF/Microwave Between Series Adapters and Cable Assemblies Announced by San-tron

San-tron (www.santron.com), a leading U.S. designer and manufacturer of RF/microwave coaxial connectors and cable assemblies, has recently introduced several new additions to their 4.3-10 series of RF/microwave adapters, and low PIM cable assemblies.

San-tron's range of 4.3-10 between series adapters provides users and installers of mobile wireless systems easy connection capability between current generation wireless communication systems and legacy equipment. They are available for 4.3-10 series to 7/16, N, or SMA series connectors. San-tron 4.3-10 between series adapters are rugged, deliver high-performance signal transmission, and low passive intermodulation, or PIM.

For connecting current generation to legacy equipment, San-tron also offers custom 4.3-10 to 7/16, N, or SMA series cable assemblies. These cable assemblies are available with eSeries (enhanced performance) connectors and SRX (low PIM) cable. Connector styles include; jacks, bulkhead jacks as well as right angles, square flangereceptacles or plugs. San-tron 4.3-10 cable assemblies with eSeries connectors and SRX cable provide for reliable performance up to 6 GHz and a low passive intermodulation level of <-160 dBc.

The 4.3-10 (or 4.3/10) series of RF/microwave coaxial connectors were designed as an alternative to the much larger 7/16 and N connectors (and often confused with 4.1-9.5 series connectors). 4.3-10 connectors are 30% smaller and 60% lighter than comparable 7/16 connectors yet maintain low passive intermodulation performance.

San-tron's 4.3-10 connectors and cable assemblies are designed to meet global standards for performance and safety. Applicable standards include IEC 61169 and MIL PRF 39012. They offer designers of the 5G wireless telecom, medical equipment, instrumentation, IoT, M2M, satellite and military communication systems a smaller, lighter weight coaxial solution that stand up to harsh, outdoor environment applications.

San-tron Attains JCP Certification

This certification was developed in order to enhance North American security, which demands that the U.S. and Canada combine technology resources for mutual benefit. The JCP facilitates the access of unclassified technical data for the benefit of U.S. and Canadian defense and high technology industries. Such unclassified technical data – specifically with military or space application, includes any blueprints, drawings, plans, instructions, computer software and documentation, or the other technical information that can be used, or adapted for use, to design, engineer, produce, manufacture, operate, repair, overhaul, or reproduce military or space equipment or technology concerning such equipment.

This certification will allow San-tron to:

  • Request unclassified technical data controlled by the DoD or DND;
  • Respond to defense-related contracts or solicitations whose specifications involve unclassified technical data releasable only to certified contractors;
  • Attend restricted gatherings where unclassified technical data are presented;
  • Arrange unclassified visits directly with other certified U.S. or Canadian defense contractors or U.S. and Canadian military facilities.

San-tron has attained their certification under the United States/Canada Joint Certification Program (JCP). This certification establishes San-tron’s eligibility to receive unclassified technical data disclosing critical technology governed by the U.S. Department of Defense Directive 5230.25 and the Canadian Technical Data Control Regulations (TDCR).

These RF-enhanced connectors have been specified on a number of programs, including 20 GHz ground-based satellite links, agricultural GPS systems and recently the London Underground.

San-tron Announces Cornerstone Technical Sales as New Rep

Using San-tron’s ultra-simple Cable Builder, subsystem engineers can easily select their desired flexible, hand formable, or semi-rigid cable type, add the RF coaxial connectors of their choice and specify unique performance needs such as low loss, low PIM, pressurized, or other high performance traits.

Pressurized Connectors Meet IP68 Standard Without Using Internal O-Rings

“San-tron’s new pSeries pressurized connector design expands the typical operating frequency ranges through 30 GHz, while eliminating failure-prone internal O-rings,” noted San-tron Director of Engineering Fred Hull.  “These RF-enhanced connectors have been specified on a number of programs, including 20 GHz ground-based satellite links, agricultural GPS systems, the London Underground, and space-borne systems.”

Pressurized coaxial connectors are vital where high pressure is maintained for extended periods and in environments needing protection against moisture and other contaminates – such as agriculture, aviation, and marine applications. San-tron’s pSeries pressurized connectors exhibit low-loss characteristics and meet MIL-STD 202 Method 212, Condition D (+125° C fluorocarbon leak), test conditions. Connector seal integrity exceeds 10-5 cm3/s when tested under 30 psi pressure of alcohol per STI 8.2.4-13. The proprietary insulator also offers five times more thermal stability than standard PTFE insulators found in other pressurized connectors.

San-tron pSeries pressurized connectors are available in a variety of different connector types, including 2.92 mm, 3.5 mm, SMA, TNC, and Type N series.

Video Reviews Innovative High Performance SMA Connectors and Assemblies the eSMA from San-tron

“We developed our own flexible SRX-141 cable that is much easier to produce, much more repeatable, and does not have the poor historic survivability factors of semi-rigid cable,” notes Hull.  “These SMA connectors outperform most customer applications, all but eliminating the need to go to semi-rigid cable.”

San-tron’s eSMA connectors feature an extended crimp ferrule and failure-proof SMA coupling nuts, plus a number of innovative internal design enhancements, including EZ-style, solder-free, captivated center contacts and a solder-damming positive cable stop, for operator-to-operator and production-lot-to-production-lot consistency.  With a nominal impedance of 50 Ohms, San-tron’s eSMA connectors are weatherproof and come standard with gold-plated bodies and center contacts. eSMA connectors are available as plugs, bulkhead jacks, and flange-mounted jacks for a completed in-box solution.

San-tron eSMA cable assemblies are delivered with eSMA connectors professionally installed on high performance flexible cable. Featuring a typical VSWR of 1.22 through 20 GHz and a relatively flat response curve, these robust and high-performance eSMA cable assemblies can be bent firmly, even close to the connector, where many solder joints in hand-formable assemblies often break. The flexibility of lightweight, FEP-jacketed, corrosion-resistant, phase and attenuation stable, and shielded SRX-141 cable eliminates the need for hand or precision machine bending and allows cables to be routed through the most convenient or desired path.  Available in cable sizes 0.086 and 0.141 eSMA assemblies are built-to-spec in desired lengths and delivered with short lead times. Brochure Details Latest Low PIM Cable Assemblies and Adapters from San-tron

The SRX brochure details their full line of low-PIM cable assemblies which can support eight different applications, including in-box, in-cabinet, cabinet-to-cabinet, short jumper (low tension), outdoor, riser, plenum run, and test-and-measurement. Also highlighted in the brochure is San-tron’s new SRX-141 cable, designed specifically for in-cabinet applications – it is a fully flexible cable designed as a drop-in replacement for semi-rigid cables. The SRX-141 is engineered with stability under vibration in mind and is available in both standard and plenum ratings.  The brochure also gives several examples of PIM performance graphs and provides vibration test results (MIL-STD-202, Method 204, Condition B).

Low PIM SRX Coaxial Adapters Released

Available in straight for test applications, and four-hole flange & bulkhead for system integrations, the new SRX low-PIM adapters assure reliable service with PIM performance beyond -170dBc. The within series DIN-7/16 adapters are designed with 100 psec electrical lengths which allow for easy adapter substitutions when involved with phase matched measurements. Likewise, the DIN-7/16 to Type N adapters are designed with 225 psec electrical lengths supporting calibration and substitution methods.

San-tron Enhances SRX Low PIM Cable Assemblies Line Improves Stability

The SRX™ cable assemblies serve PIM-sensitive environments though 6 GHz and military/avionics environments through 20 GHz, meeting requirements for robust survivability in high-frequency applications. Designed to support systems integrators, the SRX low-PIM cable assemblies combine San-tron’s low-distortion eSeries coaxial connectors with high-quality SRX coaxial cables.

“San-tron has carefully selected materials and fabrication techniques to minimize PIM,” explained San-tron Director of Engineering Fred Hull. “For example, we combined Teflon™ with Rexolite™ to improve holding capability and added a solder step in manufacturing to improve stability. Also, the use of heat-treated BeCu center contacts enables us to achieve strong mating forces with positive wiping action, minimizing current saturation.”

San-tron now offers seven complete SRX cable assembly deployment scenarios: in-cabinet, plenum-rated, short runs and jumper applications, long-haul cable runs, indoor use, outdoor use, and riser, with interconnect options for SMA, Type N, 7/16, and TNC mating. For in-cabinet and plenum-rated deployments, low-PIM SRX cable assemblies utilize flexible-141, conformable-141, and semi-rigid RG-402 cable. The flexible solutions support plenum-rated deployments that range from 150 W at 2.5 GHz through 90 W at 6 GHz. Characterized by PIM performance of -161 dBc and attenuation of 22 dB per 100 feet, these cable assemblies offer a bend radius of 0.75 inches and handle operating temperatures to +125°C.

For short runs and jumper applications, San-tron has developed a unique solution for clamp-type terminations to braided, flexible coaxial cables. Based on TCOM-240TM cable, these assemblies support power levels that range from 160 W at 2.5 GHz through 90 W at 6 GHz. Characterized by PIM performance of -161 dBc and attenuation of 13 dB per 100 feet, these cable assemblies offer a bend radius of 2.5 inches and handle operating temperatures to +85°C. Performance is stable under vibration within a 1 dB window. For flame-retardant requirements, SRX assemblies employ TCOM-240-FR cables; for plenum-rated installations, assemblies feature SFT-205TM cables with a temperature rating to +165°C and a power rating of 420 W.

For long-haul run deployments requiring robust, low-loss performance, San-tron implemented similar techniques for the larger TCOM-400 series to achieve extremely low and stable PIM levels, while allowing for continuous bending and flexure. With TCOM-400 cable, these cable assemblies support power levels that range from 310 W at 2.5 GHz through 180 W at 6 GHz. Characterized by PIM performance of -161 dBc and low attenuation of 7 dB per 100 feet, these assemblies offer a bend radius of 4 inches and handle operating temperatures to +85°C. Performance is stable under vibration within a 1 dB window. For flame-retardant requirements, SRX assemblies employ TCOM-400-FR cables; for plenum-rated installations, assemblies feature SFT-393 cables with a temperature rating to +165°C and a power rating of 1020 W.

Video Demonstrates Latest KBand 292 mm Microwave Connectors

Developed for RF/microwave engineers designing components for demanding applications in the 40 GHz or K-band ranges, San-tron S292 40 GHz connectors offer VSWR of <1.18 through 40 GHz. Designed to industry standard high-performance 0.012 glass-to-metal feedthru, San-tron’s transitional RF geometry greatly reduces the tolerance sensitivity of the final interconnection. This design enables many next-generation microwave systems, such as high frequency airport body scanners.

 

“To meet our customers’ requirements for robust 40 GHz capability, we needed a solid transition from the glass bead into the connector,” explains San-tron Director of Engineering Fred Hull. “We designed our structure to meet the customer’s specifications, resulting in a flat TDR response from the glass bead into the connector.”

 

The connector’s 0.0689 launch diameter and center-contact geometry are specifically oriented to the Thunderline-Z 0.012 pinned glass beads and are RF matched to the dielectric properties of the #7070 Corning glass, resulting in impressive VSWR figures through 40 GHz for S292 connectors. 

 

To meet the robust requirements of military and satellite avionics and achieve the flat TDR response, San-tron selected tough and reliable Delrin acetal resin as the dielectric component. “A rock-hard material, Delrin enabled us to achieve low TDR response in a one-piece construction,” notes Hull.

 

San-tron supplies both female and male versions of the high-performance field-replaceable panel receptacles – in seven flange styles and with two-hole and four-hole options – for full compatibility with Anritsu K, APC 3.5, SMA, WSMA, and 3.50 mm connectors. 

 

The plots in the photo (presented as a baseline) represent data from two connectors mated via a Thunderline-Z feedthru and exhibit VSWR of <1.04 through 12 GHz and <1.18 through 40 GHz. The San-tron S292 video provides a detailed explanation of the plots.
