New Type N Connectors Offer Smooth Electrical Performance From DC To 18 GHz

May 12, 2008--Ipswich, MA--San-tron, Inc., a leading manufacturer of RF coaxial connectors and cable assemblies, has launched a line of rugged Type N connectors capable of mode-free performance from DC to 18 GHz. Traditional Type N connectors have been limited in performance to about 12.4 GHz. These new 18-GHz Type N connectors are fully compatible with standard Type N connectors and adapters, allowing users and designers of high-frequency components, systems, and test equipment to extend the performance of their hardware.

The new Type N connectors are based on precision machined components and PTFE dielectric material for outstanding electrical performance through 18 GHz. The 50-O connectors feature less than -0.2 dB insertion loss from DC to 18 GHz with maximum VSWR of 1.30:1. They are rated for operating voltages to 1000 V RMS and maximum dielectric withstanding voltage of 2500 V RMS. The rugged Type N connectors incorporate silicone rubber gaskets for environmental protection and are designed for operating temperatures from -65 to +165°C.

San-tron's new 18-GHz Type N connectors are available in male and female versions for use with flexible and semi-rigid cable types of various diameters. Connectors can be supplied for crimp, clamp, or solder cable terminations. In addition, the company is offering a variety of 18-GHz Type N receptacles with panel, bulkhead, press-fit, and threaded mountings. The 18-GHz Type N connectors are available with a variety of finishes, including silver and albaloy.

Fred Hull, San-tron's director of engineering, emphasizes that the new Type N connectors are quite affordable in spite of the enhanced performance: "In the past, we've developed some precision bead structures that were ideal for test and measurement applications, but at a premium in price. For these new Type N connectors, we created a unique, balanced internal design that provides the high frequency performance of precision connectors, but without the demanding requirements for tightly machined tolerances." The new Type N connectors, which are priced competitively with conventional 11-GHz Type N connectors, are ideal for applications requiring continuous, broadband frequency coverage, including in commercial communications systems, military radar and electronic-warfare (EW) systems, and in test and measurement equipment.
